Boyana Lake is a small artificial lake in Vitosha Mountain, southeast of Sofia’s Boyana neighbourhood, in the Ralevitsa area. It lies at 1,027 m a.s.l. and covers roughly 2,000 m²—a quiet woodland spot that feels far from the city despite being close.
The lake was shaped in the early 20th century during the construction of Sofia’s mountain water-supply works, on the site of a former spring-fed marsh. Today it shelters notable amphibians such as the European toad, the marsh frog and crested newts, and Boyana Waterfall is nearby. As the area is a water-protection zone, visitors should follow local rules and keep the shoreline undisturbed.
