Chepan mountain

Mount Chepan is a low but strikingly open karst mountain in the western Balkan Mountains (Sofia Province), set between Godech and Dragoman and rising directly above the Dragoman Marsh. Its narrow crest runs about 20 km west–east, with steep rocky slopes dropping toward the Sofia Basin; to the east it links with Mala Mountain near the Buchin Pass.

The highest point is Petrovski Krast (“Golem Chepan”) at 1,205.6 m, towering above the marsh. Built of Triassic and Jurassic rocks and shaped by classic karst forms, the mountain is largely waterless. Beyond the wide views, the area is known for rich medicinal flora and traces of an ancient Thracian sanctuary on the southern side.
