Elata Cave

Elata Cave is a remarkable pit cave in the Ponor Mountains, part of the Western Balkan range, near the village of Zimevitsa, which lies on a high plateau above the Iskar Gorge. Its entrance is set in a beech forest at the base of a small rocky rim, and the cave itself is formed in Jurassic limestone. It begins with a narrow vertical drop of about 18 meters and continues into a sloping gallery richly decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, rimstone formations, crystal-clear pools, and rare stone lilies. Beyond its visual beauty, Elata is also important for its underground ecosystem, as it shelters endemic cave-dwelling species typical of Bulgarian karst. The cave has been protected as a natural monument since 1964, highlighting its scientific and natural value.
