Magura Cave

Magura Cave is one of Bulgaria’s largest and most striking caves, near Rabisha village (Vidin Province) and close to Belogradchik, carved in the limestone Rabisha Hill. Its accessible galleries stretch for about 2.5 km, with rich speleothems—stalactites, stalagmites and massive columns—kept in a steady underground climate of around 12°C. Its hallmark is a unique set of prehistoric wall paintings made with bat guano: dancers, hunters, masked figures, animals, stars and symbolic signs. The images span several periods, from the Epipalaeolithic to the beginning of the Bronze Age, and the site has been on UNESCO’s Tentative List since 1984.
