Mechkulski Waterfall

Mechkulski Waterfall lies hidden in the steep, rocky valley of the Mechkulska River in northwestern Pirin, between the village of Mechkul and the Kresna Gorge. Its water plunges down an imposing rock face with a geodetically measured drop of 51.3 metres, making it the highest waterfall in the Pirin Mountains. The river continues toward the nearby Struma, while numerous smaller cascades occupy its narrow valley. The setting remains wild and difficult to reach: the approach is unmarked, parts of it have no established trail, and the rocky viewpoints are unsecured. Nearby, in the Amina area, stand the St Mina megalithic rock sanctuary, a small chapel, an old cemetery and a memorial to villagers who died in the Balkan War. Long known to local residents, the waterfall became widely known only in 2022; a 2023 geodetic survey confirmed its record height.
