The Belogradchik Rocks

The Belogradchik Rocks are a striking natural landmark of sandstone and conglomerate on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains, next to the town of Belogradchik in Vidin Province (north-west Bulgaria). The formations follow the Belogradchik fault in the Western Fore-Balkan, stretching for roughly 30 km and 3–5 km wide, while individual pinnacles rise up to about 200 m above the surrounding terrain.

Iron minerals tint the cliffs red, ochre and yellow, and erosion has carved them into recognizable silhouettes—locally known as the Madonna, the Rider, the Monks and many more. The most scenic section embraces the Belogradchik Fortress (“Kaleto”), where the rocks double as natural ramparts and open views over the rolling Fore-Balkan hills.
