The Devil's Throat cave

The Devil's Throat cave, located in the heart of the Trigrad Gorge in the Rhodope Mountains, is one of the most impressive and mysterious natural landmarks in Bulgaria. Unlike other caves, it does not captivate with delicate rock formations but with its raw power and scale. The Devil's Throat is a chasm cave, formed by the collapse of earth layers, and its enormous "Roaring Hall" hosts the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Here, the waters of the Trigrad River plummet with a deafening roar from a height of 42 meters, creating an unforgettable experience.

A visit to the cave is a true adventure that begins by passing through a 150-meter artificial gallery leading directly to the base of the Roaring Hall. The hall's dimensions are colossal – it could easily fit the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral inside. From here, the tourist route continues up a steep concrete staircase of 301 steps, which winds alongside the roaring waterfall and leads visitors out through the cave's natural entrance. The sight and sound of the falling water are mesmerizing, revealing the primal force of nature.

The cave's name and mystique are closely linked to ancient legends and unsolved mysteries. According to the most famous tale, it was here that Orpheus descended into the underworld of Hades to search for his beloved Eurydice. The mystery is further enhanced by the fact that the river's waters disappear into a siphon over 150 meters long, and nothing carried away by them ever re-emerges on the surface, which provides one of the explanations for its sinister name. In addition to its legends, the Devil's Throat is also a globally significant bat sanctuary, hosting the largest wintering colony of the common bent-wing bat in the Balkans.
