The Erma River Gorge

The Erma River Gorge, also known as the Tran (Lomnitsa) Gorge, is a canyon-like defile carved by the Erma River on the eastern edge of the Ruy Mountain, a few kilometres north of the town of Tran, near the village of Lomnitsa. Over millennia the river has cut a narrow passage through limestone: in places the walls rise more than 120 m almost vertically, while in the tightest section the stream slips between rock faces just a few metres apart. Declared a protected natural monument in 1961, the area preserves striking rock formations, small karst channels and waterfalls along the watercourse, and an eco-trail offers close-up views of the dramatic “stone corridor” and the lush river valley.
