The Melnik Pyramids

The Melnik Earth Pyramids are sandstone and conglomerate hoodoos at the southwestern foothills of the Pirin Mountains, around the town of Melnik and the villages of Karlanovo and Rozhen, at 350–850 m a.s.l. They formed in Neogene–Quaternary sediments sculpted by rainfall and stream erosion.

Erosion has carved mushrooms, towers and obelisks with knife-edge crests and near-vertical sandy slopes; individual pinnacles rise up to 100 m, giving the landscape an otherworldly profile.

Since 1960 the site has been a protected natural landmark, valued for its Mediterranean-tinged habitats and for views toward Rozhen Monastery and historic Melnik.
