The mouth of the Iskar River

The mouth of the Iskar River is a calm, open river landscape in northern Bulgaria, where the country’s longest river flowing entirely within Bulgaria joins the Danube. It lies between the villages of Baykal and Gigen, in the low, level terrain of the Danubian Plain. The place is not defined by steep scenery, but by a sense of breadth, water, and distant horizon typical of the great Danube lowlands. In its final stretch, the Iskar enters a wide valley with a very gentle gradient, and the area around the confluence still reflects the character of older riverside terrain that was once more marshy and meandering. The site also carries historical significance, as the ancient Roman city of Ulpia Oescus is located nearby, close to Gigen.
