The mouth of the Kamchiya River

The mouth of the Kamchia River is where the largest Bulgarian river flowing directly into the Black Sea spreads into a broad coastal lowland and forms an estuary shaped by sand spits, dune fields and wet lagoon-like pockets. It’s a striking meeting point of river, sea and forest, with floodplain swamps and dense longoz woodland created by seasonal overflows.

The area lies within the protected Kamchia complex (the “Kamchia” reserve and the “Longoza” protected area), about 25 km south of Varna, near the Kamchia and Shkorpilovtsi resorts. It is a key refuge for wildlife, hosting many bird species and serving as a stopover on the Via Pontica migration route, while the wide beach and dunes keep the landscape feeling wonderfully wild.
