The mouth of the Veleka River

The mouth of the Veleka River is one of the most scenic corners of Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast. Near the village of Sinemorets, the river slows down and, before reaching the sea, forms a calm lagoon-like stretch and a distinctive sandy spit that separates fresh and salt water. Set within Strandzha Nature Park, the area blends riparian forests, dunes and open sea views.

The site is protected as the “Mouth of the Veleka River” protected area (1511.2 ha, designated on 1 September 1992). It safeguards the lower river valley, the roughly 500 m long sand spit and part of the coastline. The spit’s shape changes with storms and seasons and is often flooded in winter and spring, giving the landscape its ever-shifting character.
