The Negovanka River Canyon

Emen Canyon (the canyon of the Negovanka River) lies in the Central Fore-Balkan near the village of Emen, about 20 km west of Veliko Tarnovo. Over time, the river has carved soft limestone into a narrow gorge with rapids, pools, small waterfalls and sheer walls rising up to roughly 80–90 m. The most popular stretch is the Lower Boaz, where an eco-trail with bridges and steps follows the river to the 10-metre Momin Skok (Girls’ Leap) waterfall and its calm pool. Nearby is Emen Cave, one of Bulgaria’s longest caves and an important bat habitat. The area has been protected since 1980.
