The Seven Rila Lakes

The Seven Rila Lakes are Bulgaria’s best-known group of glacial lakes, set like a staircase in the Damga section of Northwestern Rila between 2,095 and 2,535 m a.s.l. They are linked by small streams and tiny cascades, and their outflow gathers in the Lower Lake, which gives rise to the Dzherman River.

Each lake is named after a distinctive feature: Salzata (The Tear) is the highest, Okoto (The Eye) is the deepest (37.5 m), and Bliznaka (The Twin) is the largest by area. With crisp alpine scenery and sweeping viewpoints, the area is one of Bulgaria’s most visited natural landmarks.
